About the Services
Offered on the Senior Talk Line There are three services are offered by the Senior Talk Line: If you have additional questions, please chick (here) for information on who to call. ________________________________________________________________________ What is the Telephone Reassurance service? The Telephone Reassurance service is a free telephone counseling service for senior citizens, their caregivers, retirees and widowed persons, grandparents and others who might find comfort in having a counselor call them on a regular basis to talk. What do counselors talk about with Senior Reassurance clients? Our senior clients are encouraged to talk about anything that is of interest or concern to them. Senior citizens have some specific and delicate issues, and we share their interest and concern. This program is designed to reduce social isolation. We understand that sometimes it just helps to have someone to talk with, someone who will listen...and care. How often are the Senior Reassurance clients called? One of our trained staff or volunteer counselors calls each senior client at least three times a week. Often our senior clients are called every day. How do I sign up for the Senior Reassurance program? Signing up for the program is very simple. Just call the Crisis Center's Senior Talk Line at (205) 328-8255 and request to be signed up for Senior Reassurance service. When you call, you will be asked some very basic questions, such as name, telephone number, age, etc., all of which are kept as confidential background information for our staff and volunteer counselors. The Telephone Counseling service is a free hotline service that a senior or their caregivers can call to express their concerns or request information. The anonymous caller can discuss any topic in a confidential and unconditionally positive environment. How is the Telephone Counseling service different form the Telephone Reassurance Service? With the Telephone Counseling service, the senior clients make the telephone call on an as needed basis; with the Telephone Reassurance service, our counselors call the senior clients on a regular basis. What are some examples of topics that a senior can discuss on the Telephone Counseling service? Senior clients can talk about anything, but some specific examples include: feeling of suicide, loneliness, bereavement, isolation, displacement or other conditions which complicate the quality of life for the senior adult. When can I call the Telephone Counseling service? The Telephone Counseling service is available to seniors from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm, seven days a week. The telephone number is (205) 328-8255. Education services are free presentation services offered to retirement homes, assisted living facilities, nursing homes, hospice organizations, and business and civic organizations. What types of presentations are offered? Each presentation is customized to the needs of the requesting organization. How do I request a presentation? Simply call the Crisis Center's Administrative Line at (205) 323-7782, and speak to Ana Sullivan on extension 233, or Mike Falligant on extension 219. If there is no answer, just leave your name, telephone number, and a brief message. You will receive a return call.
