Teen Sexual Assault Survivor Group The Crisis Center is implementing a new and innovative support group designed specifically to offer hope and support to teen women that have been victims of sexual assault. Anyone interested in sharing and talking about the issues related to their sexual assault should contact Meg McGlamery at (205) 323-7782, extension 208 to register.
Purpose The purpose of the Teen Sexual Assault Survivor Group is to provide a safe environment for peer support and exploration of feelings that are associated with the recovery from sexual assault. Participants will have an opportunity to - Learn about sexual assault; normalize feelings and behaviors following sexual assault. Realize that they are not alone in their recovery; learn how to access and accept support from parents, friends, group members and helping professionals. Learn how others cope and express painful feelings about sexual assault. Receive social support not available in typical social settings. Develop communication skills. Improve ability to identify and express feelings and implement healthy coping strategies. Format The format of each session will be the same - Opening Circle - Group members sit in a circle and greet one another. At this time, the group facilitator introduces the activity / topic for the session. Activity or Video - Designed to focus the group on a particular aspect of recovery from sexual assault. Share Activity and Open Discussion - Group members have the opportunity to reflect and share their personal experiences. If any group member feels uncomfortable with sharing and discussing their particular experiences, it is OK to "pass" and not share. . Closing Circle - Each member shares one thing they learned, enjoyed doing, or had in common with another group member. Rules Confidentiality of Discussion - Participants may share what they said or did in group: participants may not share what others said or did in the group.
Respect for Group Members - Participants must always respect other members.
Open Expression of Feelings - All feelings are OK; none are off limits. No Requirement to Share - Group members may participate by listening to other members and simply “pass” if they do not feel comfortable sharing their experiences. Plan The teen survivor group will be structured in a series of 6 closed sessions, where only participants and facilitators are present. The sessions are planned to follow the outline shown below - Session # 1 - Introduction - This session includes an activity to help facilitate communication between group members Session # 2 - Feeling Identification - This session includes an activity designed to help group members identify how they and those around them are feeling. Session # 3 - Grieving the Loss - The group watches a video about grief and sexual assault. Group members are given the opportunity to discuss their journey through grief Session # 4 - Coping with Recovery - Participants identify and discuss healthy and unhealthy coping strategies. Session # 5 - Identifying Resources - Group members are asked to list and share potential allies and potential deterrents to their growth and healing. Session # 6 - Closure - Participants identify and discuss future coping/survival plans. Location All sessions will be held at the Crisis Center's main office, which is located at -
