Sexual Assault Support Group Often sexual assault victims feel that if they avoid talking about their assault, they will be able to forget. Most who try this approach eventually realize that they need to deal openly with their assault. They discover that their unresolved feelings and fears hold them back from enjoyable lives and the freedom to participate fully in relationships. Talking openly about the assault can help relieve some of the control of the assault and help to begin the process of recovery. The Sexual Assault Support Group provides a safe and confidential setting for victims to share their feelings and thoughts with others who have experienced the same trauma. Group members learn positive coping skills from each other in order to move into the role of "survivors" rather than "victims."
Our goal is that each survivor that
participates in the group meetings receives both
practical and emotional support regarding their sexual assault, as well as
a realization that the rape was not their fault and that their reactions
to the assault are normal. Meeting Specifics Format: Participants - Meetings are open to women only. Participation is not limited to victims, but is also open to those indirectly affected (friends, family, neighbors, etc.). Ongoing - Sessions are ongoing. There is no starting point or ending point. New participants may enter into the support group at any time. Counselor Facilitated - Sessions are facilitated by a trained Rape Response Crisis Counselor. Group Directed - Group members are encouraged to direct the content of the meetings in a manner that is most beneficial to the membership. Members are encouraged to make suggestions as to preferred content and format of the meetings. Flexible - The format and content is very flexible and may vary from educational topics, to group discussion, to specific topics of interest. Date: Sessions are held on the first and third Wednesday of each month. Time: Each session starts at 6:30 p.m. an ends at approximately 8:00 p.m.
Location:
All sessions are held at the Crisis Center's main office building,
located at 3600 8th Avenue South, Birmingham, Alabama.
