About the Rape Response Program

What is the purpose of Rape Response?

Rape Response was started in 1975 on the premise that an intervention made after the assault, accompanied by supportive follow-up counseling, can be a powerful deterrent to the development of future emotional and psychological problems (e.g. sexual dysfunction, depression, suicide, phobias, etc.).

What services are provided to rape survivors by Rape Response?

Rape Response provides the following services to rape survivors:

  • Immediate Services - Medical advocacy is available 24 hours a day, every day  at the Crisis Center's SANE facility or local emergency rooms.  Our Rape Response advocates stay with the victim until they are discharged, providing emotional support and practical information.

  • Aftercare Services - After a victim is discharged, follow-up counseling is provided as needed by our professional staff.  If a client wishes to press charges against her assailant, our staff will serve as an advocate throughout the law enforcement and criminal justice proceedings.  If the client does not wish to press charges, our counselor will support this decision as well.

Does Rape Response offer group counseling services for victims of sexual assault?

Yes, Rape Response provides support groups for sexual assault victims to talk openly about their experiences in a safe, nonjudgmental environment.  The counseling is available for both the sexual assault victim and their immediate family members.  For more information about group counseling, click (here).

Is there a teen support group?

Yes, Rape Response provides a separate support group just for teens.  This is a safe and nonjudgmental environment where teens can talk openly in a confidential and supportive environment.  For more information about the teen counseling, click (here).

Can I use the services of Rape Response long after a rape occurred?

Yes, some rape survivors go months or years without reporting their rape or seeking medical attention.  Individuals often contact Rape Response through our Crisis Line when they eventually decide to seek help in dealing with their assault.

Can I call Rape Response if I am not the one that was raped?

Yes, sometimes we receive calls from a rape survivor's friend or family member, wanting to know how to best help a loved one who has been raped.  For whatever reason, when you call there is someone always available to provide information and support.

Is there any cost to me for the services provided by Rape Response?

No, all services are free.

If I call Rape Response, will my call be kept confidential?

Yes, all calls are confidential.
